One fascinating connection to August 11 comes from Florida's colonial history. On August 11, 1776, news of the signing of the Declaration of Independence finally reached St. Augustine, then the capital of British East Florida. Unlike the thirteen colonies, East Florida remained loyal to Britain, making Florida's Revolutionary history very different from much of the rest of the country.
While modern-day Tampa had not yet become the thriving city we know today, these events helped shape Florida's future and eventually the growth of the entire Tampa Bay region.
