How to Care for Fresh Cut Roses So They Last Longer
There’s nothing quite like the beauty and fragrance of fresh roses. Whether you received a romantic bouquet, anniversary flowers, or a “just because” arrangement, proper care can help your roses stay beautiful for days longer. Start with a Clean Vase
Before placing your roses in water, thoroughly clean your vase with warm water and soap. Bacteria buildup is one of the biggest reasons cut flowers wilt quickly.
Trim the Stems Properly
Using sharp scissors or floral shears, cut about one inch off the stems at a 45-degree angle. This allows the roses to absorb water more efficiently. Re-trim the stems every two to three days for maximum freshness.
Remove Leaves Below the Waterline
Any leaves sitting in water can create bacteria that shortens the life of your roses. Remove any foliage that falls below the vase water level.
Use Fresh Water and Flower Food
Fill your vase with lukewarm water and add the flower food packet included with your arrangement. Change the water every two days to keep your roses hydrated and healthy.
Keep Roses Away from Heat and Sunlight
Avoid placing roses near windows with direct sunlight, kitchen appliances, or air vents. Cooler rooms help roses stay fresh significantly longer.
Revive Drooping Roses
If your roses begin to droop, trim the stems again and place them in warm water for about an hour. This often helps revive tired blooms.
If you receive roses already arranged in a vase the rules are the same. Just grasp the roses at the neck of the vase and lift them out. Rince the vase as well as you can before adding fresh water and food. Rince the stems and then replace them in the clean vase of water. * A good trick for large rose arrangements that may be too big to grasp with your hand is to place the whole vase in your sink, then run water from the tap directly in the vase flushing the old water out and replacing it with new.
