Did You Know? #28: Your Flowers Still Need Water—even When You Can’t See It!

Written by Petal Perfection Flower Company

A beautiful basket of flowers or a lush arrangement in a decorative box may not look like a traditional vase arrangement—but those fresh flowers still need water!

At Petal Perfection Flower Company, we want you to enjoy your flowers long after they arrive. One easily overlooked care step is checking the water hidden beneath the blooms.

A Hidden Container Still Needs Attention

Fresh arrangements in baskets and decorative boxes typically contain a watertight liner or inner container. Ceramic containers can also conceal the water level.

Because you cannot easily see inside, it’s tempting to assume there is enough water. Make checking part of your daily routine instead.

Find an accessible opening near the edge without pulling flowers out or disturbing the design. Add water slowly into the inner container, keeping it below the rim. Never pour directly onto a basket or cardboard box.

What About Arrangements in Floral Foam?

Wet floral foam supports the stems and holds water for the flowers to drink. However, its initial water supply does not last indefinitely. Flowers continue using that moisture, so foam arrangements need daily watering attention, too.

Use a small pitcher with a narrow spout to add water slowly onto an accessible area of foam and into its watertight container. Pause as you pour, allowing the water to absorb, and watch carefully for overflow.

Keep the foam moist rather than waiting until it feels dry or the flowers begin to wilt. Leave the stems in place; pulling them out and reinserting them can compromise their contact with the foam.

Misting Is Not a Substitute for Watering

A light mist does not replenish the water around the cut stem ends. For an arrangement designed in foam, watering the foam and its reservoir is the essential step.

Place the arrangement on a waterproof tray or protected surface while watering, and wipe the outside of the container dry before returning it to your furniture.

Not Sure Where to Add Water? Ask Us!

Every arrangement is different. If the flowers are densely arranged or you cannot locate the liner, contact us before pouring water into an uncertain opening.

Whether your flowers arrive in a vase, basket, box, or ceramic container, a little daily attention helps you enjoy their beauty.
