Did You Know? #26: Your Fresh Flowers May Be Drinking More Water Than You Think!

Written by Petal Perfection Flower Company

Simple Flower-Care Tips from Petal Perfection Flower Company in Tampa Bay

Your fresh flower arrangement looked perfectly happy yesterday. Today, the water level has dropped—and that beautiful hydrangea is starting to look a little dramatic.

Before you assume your flowers have reached their final curtain call, check the vase. Fresh-cut flowers continue taking up water after they are arranged, and a full-looking vase of flowers can hide a surprisingly low water level.

At Petal Perfection Flower Company, we want you to enjoy every bouquet for as long as possible. One of the easiest ways to care for fresh flowers at home is also one of the easiest to overlook: check the water every day.

Why Does the Water Level in a Flower Vase Drop?

Cut flowers draw water through their stems to help maintain their blooms and foliage. Some water also evaporates from the container.

How quickly the level drops depends on the flowers, the size of the arrangement, the container, and its surroundings. A lush bouquet in a narrow vase may have less water available than you realize.

That means there is no single watering schedule that works for every rose bouquet, hydrangea arrangement, mixed flower delivery, or seasonal centerpiece.

A quick daily check is more reliable than assuming yesterday’s water is enough.

A Full Bouquet Does Not Always Mean a Full Vase

Large flower arrangements can disguise the waterline. Greenery, ribbons, and decorative containers may make it difficult to see what is happening beneath the blooms.

Even when some water remains, shorter stems may no longer reach it.

When checking your fresh flower arrangement:

Look at the actual water level.

Make sure the cut ends of the stems remain submerged.

Keep leaves above the waterline.

Check for cloudy water, an unpleasant odor, or fallen plant material.

For flowers in an opaque container, carefully look between the stems or follow the watering instructions supplied with your arrangement. Avoid pulling apart the design just to inspect it.

Should You Add Plain Water or Flower Food?

Follow the directions on your flower-food packet when preparing fresh solution. The correct amount depends on how much water you use.

Do not add an extra packet or sprinkle concentrated flower food into the vase simply because the water level has dropped. More flower food does not automatically mean longer-lasting flowers.

If you need additional solution, mix it separately according to the package directions before adding it. Keep any remaining prepared solution in a clean, labeled container, following the product’s storage guidance.

When in doubt, ask your florist for care instructions specific to your bouquet.

Topping Off the Vase Is Only Part of Fresh Flower Care

Adding water helps keep stems supplied, but it does not remove debris or clean a dirty container.

If the vase water becomes cloudy or smells unpleasant, replace it and clean the vase. For a loose bouquet that you can safely lift out, gently remove the flowers, wash and rinse the container, and refill it with correctly mixed flower-food solution.

Remove foliage that would sit below the waterline. If needed, refresh the stem ends with clean, sharp floral tools before returning the bouquet to the vase.

For a professionally arranged centerpiece that is difficult to move, contact your florist for advice on maintaining the design.

What About Flowers Arranged in Floral Foam?

A floral foam arrangement needs water, too—even when there is no visible vase waterline.

Check it daily and slowly add water to the container in a spot where it can reach the foam. Protect your furniture, watch for overflow, and avoid pouring water directly over the flower heads.

Do not assume a fresh flower centerpiece has enough water simply because the flowers still look good.

Flower Care for Tampa Bay Homes and Offices

Whether your flowers are brightening a home in Sun City Center, an office in Tampa, or a dining table in Riverview, placement also affects their care.

Keep fresh flower arrangements away from direct sunlight, hot windows, appliances, and strong air-conditioning drafts. Choose a cool spot where you can easily check the container.

These small habits help you get more enjoyment from birthday flowers, anniversary bouquets, get-well flowers, thank-you arrangements, and everyday fresh flowers.
