How to Care for Fresh Cut Lilies
1. Start with a Clean Vase
Always wash your vase thoroughly with warm water and dish soap before arranging your flowers. Even small amounts of bacteria can dramatically shorten the life of fresh flowers.
2. Use Fresh Water
Fill your vase with cool, clean water and add the floral food packet that comes with your arrangement. Floral food contains nutrients, balances the water's pH, and helps reduce bacterial growth.
3. Trim the Stems
Before placing the lilies in the vase, cut approximately ½ to 1 inch from the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle using a sharp knife or clean floral shears.
Re-cut the stems every two to three days for maximum water absorption.
4. Remove Foliage Below the Water Line
Leaves sitting underwater quickly begin to decay and create bacteria that shorten flower life. Remove any foliage that would be below the water line.
5. Change the Water Frequently
Replace the vase water every two to three days with fresh, cool water and add additional flower food if available.
