Carnations are one of the longest-lasting cut flowers available and have been a favorite for generations. Their ruffled blooms, wide variety of colors, and exceptional vase life make them perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, sympathy flowers, weddings, everyday arrangements, and special celebrations.

At Petal Perfection Flower Company, we believe that creating beautiful floral designs is only part of our job. Helping our customers enjoy those flowers for as long as possible is equally important. Our commitment to education and staying current with the newest floral care techniques is one of the many reasons customers throughout the Tampa Bay Area have trusted us for years.

Why Carnations Last So Long

Carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus) are naturally one of the hardiest fresh-cut flowers available. With proper care, most carnations will remain beautiful for 10–21 days, often longer than roses, tulips, gerbera daisies, or lilies.

Professional florists value carnations because they:

Maintain excellent color.
Open beautifully after purchase.
Hold up well in Florida's warm climate.
Blend well with almost every flower variety.
Continue looking fresh with proper care.
How to Care for Cut Carnations
1. Start with a Clean Vase

Always wash your vase thoroughly using warm water and mild soap before adding fresh flowers.

A clean vase helps eliminate bacteria that shorten flower life.

2. Use Fresh Water

Fill your vase with cool, clean water.

Replace the water every 2–3 days.

Fresh water is one of the simplest ways to extend the life of your carnations.

3. Use Flower Food

Professional floral preservative contains:

Sugar to feed the flowers
Acidifier to balance water pH
Bacteria inhibitor

Using the flower food included with your arrangement can dramatically increase vase life.

4. Trim the Stems

Every time you change the water:

Remove the flowers.
Cut approximately ½ inch from each stem.
Use sharp floral shears or a clean knife.
Cut at a 45-degree angle.

This opens fresh vascular tissue so the carnations can continue drinking water efficiently.

5. Remove Leaves Below the Water Line

Leaves sitting in water quickly decay and create bacteria.

Keeping stems clean below the water line greatly improves flower longevity.

6. Keep Carnations Cool

Avoid placing arrangements:

In direct sunlight
Next to heating vents
Near air conditioning vents
Close to televisions
Near ovens or kitchen appliances
Beside ripening fruit

Fruit produces ethylene gas, which causes flowers to age much faster.

7. Remove Older Blooms

As individual carnations begin fading, remove them.

This keeps the arrangement looking fresh while allowing remaining blooms to continue thriving.

Why Florists Love Carnations

Modern carnations are nothing like the carnations many people remember from decades ago.

Today's premium carnations feature:

Larger blooms
Stronger stems
Incredible fragrance in many varieties
Rich jewel tones
Soft romantic pastels
Unique antique colors
Exceptional vase life

Many luxury wedding designers now incorporate carnations into high-end floral designs because of their texture, durability, and beauty.

Carnation Colors and Their Meanings

Pink Carnations – Gratitude and appreciation
