As the Flower Blooms Episode 8: “The Letter That Never Arrived”

Written by Petal Perfection Flower Company

Some secrets fade. Others are waiting for fresh water.

The white rose stood in the doorway of Petal Perfection Flower Company’s design studio.

For once, Daisy had absolutely nothing to say.

It lasted nearly three seconds.

“Well,” she announced, “someone either needs to explain what’s happening or put me in a vase. I’m getting lightheaded.”

Rose barely heard her. Her crimson petals trembled as she looked from the stranger to the faded photograph inside the open cabinet.

The same white rose.

The same delicate curve of her petals.

“You were gone,” Rose whispered.

The stranger stepped into the morning light.

“Is that what Lily told you?”

Every bloom turned toward Lily.

“Oh, this is going to be dreadful,” murmured the blue Hydrangea.

“Dreadful?” whispered the lavender Hydrangea. “I’ve been waiting six episodes for someone to ask her a direct question.”

Lily lowered her eyes.

“Rose, I thought I was protecting you.”

Daisy gave a sharp little rustle.

“That sentence has never once improved a situation.”

A Thorny Reunion

Peony moved closer to Rose.

“Who is she?”

Rose’s voice was almost too quiet to hear.

“My sister.”

The studio fell still.

Even the Hydrangeas stopped whispering.

The white rose looked at the keepsake box beneath the worktable.

“I wrote to you,” she said. “Before I left the garden. I explained everything.”

“I never received a letter.”

“I know that now.”

Lily’s stamens quivered.

Outside, a delivery truck rumbled past. Inside, nobody moved.

Then Daisy looked down at the aged cream envelope in the cabinet.

“Oh, please tell me that isn’t the letter.”

Lily said nothing.

“Oh, it’s absolutely the letter.”

Fresh Water, Old Wounds

Peony noticed that the white rose’s outer petals had begun to soften. Her journey had clearly been long.

“Before we do anything else,” Peony said, “you need water.”

“I need answers,” Rose replied.

“She can need both.”

Peony gestured toward a freshly washed glass vase on the worktable. Nearby, the florist had prepared clean water with flower food mixed according to the packet directions.

The white rose settled into the vase.

Daisy inspected the stems.

“No leaves below the waterline. Good. We have enough things decomposing around here already.”

“Daisy,” Peony warned.

“What? I meant the secrets.”

Rose watched her sister take a slow breath.

A little water could not repair years of silence. But it could help a tired flower face the next few minutes.

The Envelope

Lily finally spoke.

“There was a storm that night. Everyone was being moved out of the garden. I found your letter after you’d gone.”

“Then why didn’t you give it to me?” Rose asked.

Lily glanced at the white rose.

“Because of what was written on the back.”

Peony carefully turned the envelope.

Across the brittle paper, in faded ink, were six words:

DO NOT TRUST THE CRIMSON ROSE.

Rose recoiled.

Her sister stared at the envelope.

“I didn’t write that.”

The blue Hydrangea leaned toward the lavender one.

“That seems significant.”

“Try to keep up,” the lavender Hydrangea whispered.

Lily’s voice broke.

“I thought it meant Rose was in danger. Or that someone wanted her blamed for something. I didn’t know whom to trust.”

“So you locked away the only thing that could explain it?” Peony asked.

“I was frightened.”

Rose looked at the golden key, still hanging from its white satin ribbon.

“And I spent all those years thinking she’d abandoned me.”

What the Letter Said

“Open it,” the white rose said.

Rose hesitated, then unfolded the letter.

My dearest Rose,

If they tell you I left willingly, do not believe them.

I overheard what happened beneath the old greenhouse. Someone has been changing the garden records.

The flower named in those records is not who you think.

Look beneath the lining of Mother’s keepsake box.

And please—whatever Lily tells you—

The rest of the page had been torn away.

Lily stared at the missing corner.

“That was whole when I found it.”

Daisy slowly turned toward the open cabinet.

“Then somebody’s been in our little box of emotional damage.”

Peony lifted the keepsake box and gently loosened its velvet lining.

Something small dropped onto the worktable.

A silver charm.

Shaped like a daisy.

Nobody spoke.

Daisy looked at the charm.

Then at the others.

“Oh, don’t start. There are thousands of us.”

From the doorway came a quiet voice.

“Yes,” it said. “But only one of you knows where the other half of that letter is.”

To be continued…

Did You Know? A Clean Vase Helps Fresh Flowers Last Longer

Before adding fresh flowers, wash your vase thoroughly to remove old residue. Fill it with fresh water, mix flower food according to the package directions, and remove any foliage that would sit below the waterline. Recut stems with clean, sharp floral tools, and refresh the water regularly.

Cloudy water and submerged leaves can encourage bacterial growth, which can interfere with water uptake and shorten vase life.

At Petal Perfection Flower Company, beautiful flowers deserve a fresh start—even when their past is a little complicated.
